Roots & Wings is taking it global – all the way from Louisville, KY to Senegal, West Africa! We are a group of 10 artists made up of poets, singers, dancers and a DJ. Our core work is centered on creating art in a collaborative way that consciously speaks on identity, community, and justice. Last summer we received a major national grant to work in partnership with several organizations to workshop with young people in the city's 5 most at risk neighborhoods - the Zones of Hope. The goal of this work is to open the door of art to young people giving them a voice and to connect the dots between themselves and the community they live in.
In addition we are taking a look at the role African culture has played in urban areas and Appalachia and what that means to being black in Kentucky. We have been working throughout the city and have visited Appalachia. The missing piece is Africa and that is the roots of Roots & Wings. As a group we have decided to travel to Senegal in July. We don't go unless everyone can go. A few other local artists are joining us on the journey as well. We have been performing and fundraising and are more than half-way there. We will continue our efforts, but we are also asking for your support. Your gift will return to Louisville through Roots & Wings’ mainstage production at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts in November. Our experiences in Senegal will help form the backbone of this new narrative of African-Americans in Kentucky. Please consider donating or sharing this post. Every little bit helps! Thank you!
