As an educator in an urban school located in Louisville, Kentucky I am aiming to transform my classroom. My vision is to create a classroom that is one-to-one. I teach 5th grade at an 100% free/reduced lunch populated school. My students lack the resources needed to cultivate their learning and for me to transform my classroom into a culturally relevant learning space. With this campaign, I would like to receive chrome books or laptops for each student in my classroom.
I serve a population that is low-income and about 85% free and reduced lunch. The district is trying to move toward a more digital approach to the classroom. This year my fifth grade class must create a digital backpack and defend their work. This will be challenging because the computers in my room are outdated and often do not work. The state also just lost grant money for textbooks and the textbooks are outdated as well. The textbooks have been in my classroom since I sat in this exact room.
With this technology, I will make my classroom semi-online which will make classwork and homework readily available to parents and students. Students will be able to work on assignments in the classroom at their own pace. This will be more feasible for a more differentiated and student centered classroom. Technology is very culturally relevant to my student population and my students will use their skills for inquiry and more critical thinking.
My goal is to reach all students and change lives by meeting them where they are.
All of your contributions are greatly appreciated.
