Da' Shana's Study Abroad Program
My name is Da' Shana Lockhart, I am currently a senior at Berea College pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Management. I also work as an Assistant Manager in the Office of Convocations, along with serving as Teaching Assistant within the Dance Department. I have been the President of my school's Hip Hop Dance Team for the past two years, a member of the SOC council, Black Student Union (BSU), and various dance groups (African, Hip Hop, and Middle Eastern)
I am pleased to announce I have been accepted into the 2018 Study Summer Egypt & Israel Study Abroad Program (June 15th - July 7th) with Kentucky Institute For International Studies (KIIS). During this three-week program we will be introduced to the rich diversity and complexities of the region through an interdisciplinary pair of courses that includes the study of history, art, culture, economics, music, dance, politics, and religion. We will get to know locals through interactive assignments, and experience on-site learning, coupled with guest lectures by local experts, which will make historical sights in Jerusalem and Cairo come alive.
Through participation in this study abroad program I hope to gain valuable life skills, broaden my worldview and experience personal growth. The experience of living in a completely different country gives you the opportunity to learn a great deal more about the culture than you would ever be able to experience in a traditional classroom. Interacting with fellow peers and the native peoples will allow me to gain a greater respect for other cultures. The immersive exposure to a new culture will help to achieve a more cultured and broadened worldview and diversify my thoughts and values. The biggest take away would be to gain personal growth. Ultimately, I hope that through this experience I’ll be able to gain a better understanding of my own culture and values..
